Monemvasia is a wonderful and picturesque medieval town along the eastern coast of the Peloponnese. In Greek, Monemvasia is ‘mone’ meaning ‘single’, and ‘embassia’ meaning ‘entrance’, and during Byzantine times, was a prominent fortress-town and rest-stop for ships between Istanbul and Italy. As a rest-stop, aristocrats and high ranking church officials would load up here on Greek products like olive-oil and wine before heading West. Be sure to explore the charming 12th century Church of Agia Sofia as it is the main monument of Monemvasia.
